The Observatory of Organizational Reality - ORO

The Observatory of Organizational Reality is an Inter-institutional Research Group included in the National Directory of Research Groups of the Brazilian Scientific and Technological Development Council - CNPq (Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e Tecnológico) and is linked to the Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (EBAPE/FGV - Escola Brasileira de Administração Pública e de Empresas da Fundação Getúlio Vargas), to the Graduate Program in Administration of the Federal University of Pernambuco (PROPAD/UFPE)and to the Graduate Course in Administration of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (CPGA/UFSC).
As a research group, its main objective is to promote greater in-depth knowledge about organizations, by means of pursuing investigations of a scientific nature that adopt innovative theoretical perspectives, the application of which contributes to local development and the common interest.
Investigation conducted by the Observatory is concentrated around several major themes, which give consistency and identity to the body of scientific production of the nucleus, namely:
- The institutions, by means of which it is possible to investigate the influence of cultural norms and the symbolic dimension of organizations and organizational fields in the construction of the broader character of society;
- Authority, as a central element in the formation of society and the configuration of social fields and power structures, as well as in the structuring of organizations;
- New organizational forms, and how they are inserted into the arrangements and configurations of contemporary organizations, with special focus on the structural, cultural and technological dimensions and underlying rationales;
- Post-modern society and the peculiarities of its organizational forms, contrasts and transitions. As special places for investigation, the Observatory concentrates on:
- Local organizations, at state and regional level, by means of which it is hoped to contribute to an increase of knowledge and the supremacy of questions which contribute to development of the region;
- Public and private institutions and the new interactions created on the basis of the new social order;
- Organizational fields, as a construct to understand the configurations of groups of organizations which comprise industrial or commercial sectors or specific networks which articulate organizations of different types;
- The cultural sector and its specific characteristics, its organizations and social players;
- The tertiary sector, as an organizational field for the implementation of public and social policy.
