Presentation of the Tourism Sector
It is an irrefutable fact that the tourist activity sector has shown signs of quite significant growth, particularly over the past two decades, both in Brazil and abroad, favored by phenomena such as scientific and technological development, internationalization of capital and globalization, which places it in a position as one of the major industries of the world.
At many different levels, the tourism sector has been developing into an important economic activity and an instrument for sustainable local development. Tourism, hotel management, gastronomy and entertainment generate a considerable number of direct and indirect jobs. According to the World Tourism Organization, this multiplier effect has repercussions in at least 52 areas of economic activity. Nonetheless, very little information is exchanged between specialists and authorities regarding the experiences acquired and the future tendencies for the sector.
Over the next few years, it is expected that the private sector will inject national and international capital in various areas of tourism, entertainment and hotels. The public sector must implement public policies to provide an adequate Brazilian tourist infrastructure to exploit the enormous economic potential of the tourism industry.
As a consequence of the dynamic scenario outlined above and the widespread perception of the strategic importance of the tourism sector to the Brazilian economy, the Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration (EBAPE - Escola Brasileira de Administração Pública e de Empresas) created the Nucleus of Advanced Studies in Tourism and Hotel Management, which by means of academic research in the area of public policy and business management related to the sector, as well as courses for training and enhancement of professionals working in the area, trade agreements and consultancy arrangements, intends to define instruments to make it possible to establish what the strategic aspects are for tourist activity in Brazil.
